The Department of B.Com. (Bank Management) was established in June 1998 and completes 20 years in June 2018. Veteran Prof. (late) V. Padmanabhan headed the Department when it was established and was later successfully and efficiently managed by his successors - Prof. B. Santhanam, Prof. S. Balasubramanian, Dr. N. Kalyanaraman, Dr. M. R. Vasudevan and Dr. R. Ganesan.
Since June 2016, the Department is being headed by Dr. J. Jayasankar.
The Department of Bank Management offers a three year Bachelors’ Degree Course in Bank Management. The course when it was started was seen as a viable alternative by students who could secure admission into the B.Com. (General) Degree Course. Till today, the course continues to be in demand despite the fact that there are four other B.Com. Courses that are offered in the college. Students who have not studied Maths in their Plus Two are also eligible to apply for the course.
There are about 70 students in each year. Both boys and girls are admitted into the course.
As the very name Bank Management suggests, the course focuses on ‘Banking’ which is an integral part of Commerce. Subjects are consciously selected for the course so as to focus attention both on the theoretical and the practical side of banking. A thorough understanding of the following subjects, included in the curriculum, would enable the student to gain in-depth knowledge of the banking sector: Theory of Money & Banking Banking Theory, Law & Practice
Financial Services & Bankassurance
Marketing of Banking Services
Banking Technology & Personality Skills
The course, thus, prepares a student to master the field of banking and he, therefore, will not be a jack of all trades.
