THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Biochemistry was established in the college during the month of October 1995 as an Undergraduate department with 7 students and later in 1998, the department of Biochemistry has been expanded by the introduction of Post graduate Program and now it has been occupied with nearly 200 students both in the UG as well as PG level

  • Started in the year 1995 with BSc course
  • Converted to Postgraduate department in the year 1998
  • Became autonomous in 2009
  • Has 11 staff members and  2 Non-teaching staffs
  • Sc., Lab was restructured in 2008 to provide separate lab for Project work
  • The department has been shifted to new building with good infrastructural facilities
  • Converted to Research Department in 2015 with the introduction of MPhil course

Dr. P. T. Srinivasan, Head, Department of Biochemistry, has 22 years of teaching / research experience in the field of Biochemistry. He completed Post graduation in CMC, Vellore and obtained doctoral degree from Bose institute, Jadhavpur University, Calcutta. His area of specialization includes Membrane Biochemistry, and Computational Biochemistry. He had organized international and national conferences, seminars, workshops and certificate courses. A a Ph.D supervisor in Bharathiyar University. He has given invited lecturers and acted as chair person in well reputed institutions. He is a board of examiner in University of Madras, Bharathi women’s college, Meenakshi ‘college for women, JBAS college, Sri Sankara arts and science college, Ethiraj college. He has many national and international research publications to his credit. He had participated in several national and international conferences. He is a member of Indian Science congress association.

Professor L.A. Arumugam has years of experience in teaching. His area of specialization includes Economics & Management . He is the Member, Board of Studies, BBA Board, University of Madras & D.G. Vaishnav College. Also, he holds various key positions as Member, Inspection Commission, University of Madras & Additional Chief Superintendent (External), University of Madras. He is also a Member, Interview Panel to select lecturers in BBA Department in the various autonomous colleges affiliated to the University of Madras. He has participated/contributed in 14 seminars/conferences/workshops held at national/international levels.

DR. R. UMA, M.Sc., M.Phil., M.Sc.,(B.I.)., SLET., Ph.D., F.S.L.Sc is an Assistant Professor of PG & Research Department of Biochemistry at DG Vaishnav College, Chennai. Since 1998, She has 20 years of teaching experience in that 13 years of Research experience in this College. She was conferred Honorary Fellowship (F.S.L.Sc) from Life Science society for her outstanding contributions in the field of Life Sciences. She is a Life member of Indian Academy of Environmental Sciences (IAES) and Indian Science congress Association (ISCA). She serves as a member of board of studies in Biochemistry in this College. Also, She is serving as a Chairperson for setting and evaluation committee in UG, PG & M.Phil., Biotechnology in Thiruvallur University, Vellore. She is an Examiner for PG Board of Biochemistry in Madras university, IGNOU and as an external examiner in various autonomous colleges in Chennai, Erode, Thirupathur, Kancheepuram & Thiruchengode as well. She is specialized in the area of Nano-biotechnology, Herbal medicines, Cancer Biology and Drug Docking Studies. Participated and presented 48 research papers in National & International Conferences and bagged 10 Best Paper & Poster AWARDS. She has been awarded an YOUNG ALGALOGIST Award in the year 2012 by Madras University. Published 22 research articles in Scopus indexed and peer reviewed National & International Journal which includes ELSEVIER & SPRINGER Publications. Guided 12 students for M.Phil Degree in Bharathidasan University, Trichy. One M.Phil & 24 students for M.Sc., projects in Madras university. Coordinated & Organized State Level Workshop with Hands on Training on Computational Biology, 2010. Facilitated a Certificate Course In Computational Biology for UG & PG students of Biochemistry. During Golden Jubilee Celebrations of DGVC, she has organized HEALTH CAMP on World heart Day- 2014 on 27 th September 2014 at Kavarapalayam village near Avadi, Chennai.

Prof. D Saravanan has 18 years of teaching experience. His area of specialization includes Metabolism, Clinical Biochemistry and Analytical techniques. His research is mainly focused on Cancer biology and phytotherapy research. • selected “HERBAL DRUG TECHNOLOGY” as my area of research, which focus mainly on Molecular Biology and cell culture techniques. To complement this published 17 papers both National and International with peer reviewed journals. Under my guidance 2 students graduate M Phil.
• In my research identified a new sequence from Caesalpinia coriaria and submitted my findings to National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBL).

Mrs.K.Nagalakshmi M.Sc, M.Phil, SLET, NET is an Assistant Professor, in the field of Biochemistry at Dwaraka Doss Govardhan Doss Vaishanav college . For the past 20 years, she has been handling papers in Molecular Biology , Bio –Instrumentation , Cloning Vectors , Bio-ethics and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), Biomedical Terminologies , Evolutionary Biology for both Under graduate and Post graduate students. Her research paper in philosophy titled Antioxidant , Antimicrobial , Antitumour’ Potentiality of Solanum nigrum under the valuable guidance of, Dr. P. Sumathi was presented at National Conference on Nutraceuticals and Future of Medical Science and was awarded 1 prize in 2007. She was the event CO-ORDINATOR for International Conference on Nutraceuticals-Concepts and Applications in Diseases conducted for the 160th year Post Diamond Jubliee Celebrations of University of Madras, 2018. She has guided about 15 PG students in their project work ,in the field of Cancer , Diabetes and Plant studies .She was appointed as a ‘Member of Board of Studies’ in Biochemistry, by the” University of Madras for a period of three years from 2010 – 2013 and, has been appointed as Evaluator in PG Board of studies for the past 10 years . Dr. D. JAYAKUMAR has a teaching experience of 4 years in the field of chemistry in this institution. He has cleared TNSET. His area of specialization includes phytochemistry, synthesis of metal complexes and their biological applications, herbal treatment for cancer.
Research Interest- Investigation of drug efficacy in combating Liver cancer and exploring the molecular mechanisms implicated in the cell are my research interest.
Ph.D Work- Ph.D thesis is focused on finding the SCIENTIFIC BASIS for a Morinda pubescens leaf, in combating liver cancer, elucidating the prominent role played by isolated phytoconstituents which are implicated in anticancer activities. In both in vitro and in vivo models are employed for the research work.

DEPARTMENT INFRASTRUCTURE

The primary objective of the department is to develop and strengthen the “academics-industry” relationship, in order to make the students passing out industry-ready besides imparting value-based education. The department also facilitates interactions with eminent experts from industries and hospitals. The M.Sc lab was renovated in the year 2008 to provide a spacious setup with a separate instrumentation room and a project room. A computer room has also been set up with  10  computers to facilitate the students to use the ebooks and to provide basic skill in computing. The department has the following labs:

Dr.R.UMA, Asst professor , PG & Research Department of Biochemistry have participated and presented  three research papers in the International Conference on Biotechnology and Biological Sciences – BIOSPECTRUM 2017, in the University of Engineering and Management, Kolkatta on 25 & 26 th August 2017.

Out of 60 research papers presented in the conference Dr. R. UMA have received TWO BEST PAPER AWARDS in the field of Molecular genetics and Nanotechnology. The following papers were: 1) Molecular genetics:  “Cytotoxicity and Apoptosis of Human Colon Carcinoma Cell (HT 29 Cells), treated with Methanolic Extract of Chlorococcum humicola’’.
