Established in the year 1964, along with the inception of the college, the Department of English offers foundation courses in English and Soft Skills. With a strength of seven teaching faculty, the department strives to maintain quality and standards in framing the curriculum, innovative teaching methodology and assessment patterns. With the college becoming autonomous in the year 2009, the department put together a contemporary syllabus for Foundation English and Soft Skills courses, tailor-made to suit the needs of the students to enhance their employability. The department also brought out the new and improved syllabus in the form of textbooks in the year 2010 and later the revised syllabus in 2013. The department has so far compiled eight textbooks. The department is in the process of establishing a language lab which will be functional soon.

Dr. G. Chandralekha Rao M.A., M.Phil., PGDHE, PGDELT, DCE, Ph.D.
Associate Professor and Head
Dr. G. Chandralekha Rao involved in the noble act of Teaching, Training and Testing since 1990. Her fields of specialization are Higher Education, Creative Writing, Phonetics, English Language and English Literature. She assumed headship in the year 2005 and since then striving to scale new heights along with the department.
M. Jayalakshmi M.A., M.Phil,
M. Jayalakshmi joined the Department of English in 1997. Her research interests are in Canadian literature and English Language Teaching. Her M.Phil Dissertation examines the themes of alienation and identity in the fiction of Malcolm Lowry. She is also the Head and Advisor of the Literature Department.
G. Geetha M.A., M.Phil, PhD
G. Geetha joined the Department of English in 1999. Her Ph.D. thesis is an attempt to understand the complex and turbulent postcolonial history of Somalia from 1969 to 1992. Her research interests include Africa and its Diaspora, Statelessness, Forced Migration and Displacement.
Aparna Sundaram M.A. PhD
Aparna Sundaram joined the Department of English in 2009. Feminist literature and gender studies are the focal points of her research. She obtained her PhD from the University of Madras for her study on contemporary women’s writing and feminist issues exploring ideas of gender and identity in the modern context.
Murali Ganam, M.A. M.Phil. PhD
Murali Ganam has taught English language courses at undergraduate and post graduate levels at the Gulbarga University, Karnataka and in Oman. He joined the Department of English in 2009, and supervises doctoral students. He focuses his attention on 19th and 20th century American literature; his PhD thesis engages with the Christian and the secular in the novels of Ernest Hemingway.
S K Rahmath, M.A, M.Phil, B.Ed, PGDCS
S.K. Rahmath joined the Department of English in 2009, and has served both in the Evening and Day departments. She is interested in contemporary Indian authors particularly Amitav Ghosh on whose novels she is currently working for her Ph.D.
V. Mainar M.A. M.Phil
V. Mainar joined the Department of English in 2013 has served both in the Evening and Day departments. His interests lie in contemporary Indian theatre and worked on Mahesh Dattani’s plays for his M.Phil dissertation.

Foundation English Course
The department has published its own textbooks for the I & II UG Foundation English course based on the new and improved syllabus introduced in 2010-11 and later in 2013-14. The textbooks contain a variety of literary pieces that have not been anthologized before. The carefully chosen texts deal with relevant social issues, political conflicts, historical perspectives and humane values representing different cultures of the world. Activities such as pre-reading, comprehension and presentation help students in developing their communication skills.

Soft Skills Programme
The Soft Skills programme offered by the department for the UG and PG students follows a very innovative and practical syllabus that focuses on enhancing the core competencies of language such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course content is designed and customized for specific needs of the first generation learners with emphasis on spoken communication. Apart from communication skills, personality development and leadership skills, the PG students are also trained in computing skills and foreign languages.

Other than regular classroom teaching sessions, the teachers adopt interactive methods of teaching by periodically conducting debates, presentations, group discussions in the classroom

Besides the basic facilities and amenities of a modern day academic institution, the department has a well stocked library with more than 400 books on English language and literature which is constantly augmented. The department has two desktop computers and a laptop with internet and printing facilities. A DVD player with a set of audio CDs and DVDs to use in the classrooms is also available in the department.

Talent Hunt: An exclusive programme for the I UG students to identify their latent talents. Various events which include debate, quiz, essay-writing, spell bee, skit, elocution, are conducted every year
PowerPoint Presentation Competition: An annual competition organised for the II year UG students to help them develop their presentation skills which is an integral part of the corporate world
Skills to Excel: A series of workshops for the UG and PG students to hone their skills – communication, interpersonal and leadership is conducted periodically
“The language we use influences the way we think”, remarked Steven Arthur Pinker, Canadian-American cognitive psychologist and linguist. English language has become a vehicle of wider accessibility in this globalised world. With a sublime vision to instil confidence in budding minds to face the competitive cosmos, the Department of English, Shift II was established. Understanding the need to bring in challenging curriculum in accordance with the pulse of the contemporary world, the Department secured a separate Board of Studies, featuring aspects that cater to the linguistic competence and cognitive appetence of the students. Imparting the nuances and aesthetics of the English Language and inculcating a passion to appreciate the genres of literature has been primary focus of the syllabus. To pragmatise the pedagogy, presentation skills and personality enrichment have been included in the curriculum. The department conducts literary events to further the proficiency of students across departments.

Dr. K.K. Lakshmi has 24 years of experience in teaching. She has served as
Dean of Students and CEO of a private Engineering College for 12 years. Her areas of specialization include American Literature, English Language Teaching and Management. Comprehending the need to have a separate curriculum, catering to the needs of the students of Shift II, she has brought in a separate
Board of Studies for Shift II in 2018. She is an active chairman of Board of Studies of Department of English, Shift II. She has attended various national and international workshops,
seminars and symposiums and presented papers. She has organised a workshop on theatre and is the chairman of the Literary Debating Society.
Mrs. Raja Shree .K has 15 years of teaching experience in Foundation English and Soft Skills. Her area of specialisation is British Literature. She has published an article and presented papers. She has participated in seminars and workshops held at national level. She has also organised a workshop on theatre. She is a member of Board of Studies, English Department, Shift II.
Dr. V.R Vadivoo Anni has 11 years of experience in teaching English. Her areas of specialization include American Literature, African American Literature, Modern Literature, General English and Soft Skills. She is the Examiner for Undergraduate English Board Examinations, University of Madras, various autonomous colleges affiliated to the University of Madras and Tamil Nadu Open University. She is the Member, Board of Studies, D.G. Vaishnav College. She has authored the book ‘Quest of the Quill’. She has contributed/participated in over 18 seminars/conferences/workshops at the national and international level.
Dr. P. Prasanna has 7 years of teaching experience. He is also a freelance writer and has published articles in newspaper dailies. He has attended 5 workshops and 3 seminars and organised a workshop on theatre. He is a member of Board of Studies, English Department, Shift II.
Ms. S. Annalakshmi has 10 years of experience in teaching. Her area of specialisation is Soft Skills. She has three years of experience in making the PG students career-ready by embellishing their soft skills. She has presented papers in national and international seminars and conferences and published a few with ISBN and ISSN. She has recently completed a course in student counselling through Informal Learning programme.
She has 12 years of experience in teaching. She is a member of Board of Studies of the department of English, Shift II. She has attended various workshops and has organised a workshop on theatre. She has visited 7 countries with a lofty motto to unite the nations in tie up with an NGO.
Ms. D. Thilagam has three years of experience in teaching. She serves as a member of Board of studies of the Department of English, Shift II. She has attended 2 workshops and functioned as one of the organizers of a workshop conducted in our college by Department of English. Her area of interest is gender studies, Ecocriticism, Humanism and Democratic Criticism. She cares and respects students and student learning.
Ms. S. Thameem Nisha has 3 years of experience in teaching. Her area of specialization is American literature. She is the member of Board of studies. She has participated in 4 state level seminars and organised a workshop on theatre for the students of D.G.Vaishnav College.
Mr. C. Veeran has 4 years of experience in teaching. His area of specialization is Language and Grammar. He has participated in A State Level Preparatory work shop on UGC NET (English) conducted by Department of English of KRMMC. He has presented a paper in an International Seminar on Representation of women: A comparative Study of Kannagi with Cornelia Sorabji conducted by Department of Tamil in DGVC. He was one of the organizers of the Work Shop on Theatre conducted by the Department of English, Shift-II. He has written subtitle for few Tamil short films.
Ms. B. Meenakshi has more than two years of experience in teaching. Her area of specialization includes film studies, personality development, soft skills and interview techniques. She has participated in various workshops and conferences and organised a workshop on theatre DG Vaishnav College. She is a member of Board of Studies, English Department, Shift II
Ms. R. Shalini Priscilla has been a part of D.G.Vaishnav College since 2016. Besides having qualified CBSE UGC NET and SET, she is a member of the Board of studies, Department of English, Shift-II. Her area of specialisation is African-American literature. She has organised a workshop on theatre on 13th March 2018 and participated in workshops held by other colleges in Tamil Nadu. She firmly believes in learner centred teaching methodology in order to create a learner friendly atmosphere which in turn ensures the active participation of the students and enhances their intellect and life skills.
Ms. N. Abinayadevi has two years of experience in teaching. Her area of specialisation is Indian Literature. She serves as the member of Board of Studies of the Department of English, Shift II. She has attended various workshops and presented papers in different colleges and has organised a workshop on theatre in D. G. Vaishnav College.
Ms. R. Haripriya has 12 years of experience in teaching. She has is a member of Board of Studies, Department of English, Shift II. She has attended various workshops and seminars and has organised a workshop on theatre for the students of D.G. Vaishnav College. She is a poet, motivational speaker and a renowned Debater.
Ms. A. Precilla Devanesam has 5 years of experience in sculpting the psyche of students through her intertextual teaching. She has qualified CBSE UGC NET and SET. She holds a diploma in Journalism and has completed a course in Student Counselling through Informal Learning Programme. Her areas of interest include Subaltern Literature and Gender Studies. She has attended 4 workshops and a symposium. She is an active member of Board of Studies, Department of English, Shift II.
Ms. K. Thilagavathy has twelve years of experience in teaching. She has two masters degree in Management and has qualified NET Management. Basically she is physics postgraduate and has qualified SET in physics. She has ten years of experience in Maritime studies handling Applied Maths, Applied physics and Communicative English. She has received gold medal in M.A English. She has qualified NET English. She is a member of Board of Studies in English in DGVC. She has attended many workshops and organised a Theatre workshop for U. G students in DGVC. She is a veena player. She has passed lower grade Government Technical Examination in Veena. She has trained many students in veena and made them pass grade exams.
Mr. H. Jidhendar has 6 years of experience in Teaching. His area of specialization is powerful articulation skill. He has worked in various educational sectors such as Arts, Engineering and polytechnic. He has been certified for the workshops conducted by British Council and SRM University and has organised a workshop on theatre for the students of DGVC. He is a member of Board of Studies, Department of English, Shift II.
Mr. Joby John has 4 years of experience in teaching. His areas of interest include Russian literature and cultural studies. He is a freelance editor and has experience as a content writer in the media industry. He has 3 years of experience as Placement trainer. He has participated in various National and international conferences and helped organise State level Conferences and workshop. He is a member of Board of Studies, Department of English, Shift II.
Ms. R. Gowri has 5years of experience in teaching. Her area of specialization includes American Literature. She has presented papers with ISBN/ISSN and participated in 15 International and National conferences, seminars and workshops. She has won first place in Newspaper Designing and second place in Book review competition. She is a member of Board of Studies, Department of English, Shift II.
Ms. K. Saranya has two years of experience in teaching. Her area of specialization includes Indian Writing in English. She has participated in 5 International conferences and presented papers in 6 International conferences and 1 National Seminar. She has attended 5 workshops and organised one for the welfare of the students DGVC.
Essay Writing Competition:
“Good writing is clear thinking made visible”, said Bill Wheeler, a renowned painter. To help the future generation enunciate their thoughts clearly, the Department of English, Shift II organised an Essay Writing Competition on 1st February 2018. A healthy strength of 49 students participated in the event and the best 2 were honoured during the inauguration of ‘Literary Debating Society’.
To provide an opportunity to voice out their unique thoughts and perspectives, the Department of English, organised an Oratorical Competition for the students of Shift II, echoing the words of Walter Isaacson, “Innovation requires articulation”. The competition was held on 1st February 2018. In order to inculcate the passion to be authentic and confident, 2 students out of 26 competitors were selected. Prizes and certificates were given to them on 13th February 2018, during the inauguration of ‘Literary Debating Society’.
Board of Studies Meet
To make it feasible to inculcate constant flair for English Language in students, the department took the initial step to bring in a constructive change in the curriculum. A Board of Studies Meet was held on 5th March 2018, to establish a separate syllabus for English and Soft Skills for UG and PG. The panel included a University nominee, a couple of subject experts. Dr. G. Kalvikarasi, the university nominee appreciated the new syllabus and offered her valuable suggestions. Dr. Bala Agarwal, from Quaid E Millath Government College for Women and Dr. Sunitha Anil Kumar, from Pachaiyappas College were the subject experts, who examined the syllabus, appreciated and offered few suggestions. The Meet was chaired by Dr. K.K. Lakshmi, Head, Department of English. The staff of the department served as the board members. The syllabus was approved by the entire board and was recommended from the academic year 2018.
Literary Debating Society & Workshop on Theatre:
The inauguration of the Literary Debating Society and a workshop on Theatre was conducted on 13th March 2018. Mr. V. Balakrishnan, actor and director of ‘Theatre Nisha’ served as the resource person. In the presence of the principal, Dr. R. Thanigaivel, the Literary Debating Society was inaugurated.
