The key factors underlying the success of the Department are the leadership, commitment and effort of its staff. There is perceptible determination to stretch beyond excellence in research and teaching. The Department has excellent infrastructure for teaching and research. There are three main laboratories, central instrument room, three classrooms, one seminar Hall and a Conference Hall. The Department is equipped with an E-classroom. The Department houses, apart from regular and routine bacteriological equipments, advanced instruments such as UV  Spectrophotometer, Gel-Doc system, Trinocular microscope that offers brightfield, darkfield and phase contrast features , High speed refrigerated centrifuges, laminar air flow stations, Inverted microscope, PCR-thermo-cycler and Electrophoresis facilities.


Our vision is to produce highly qualified, knowledgeable, and competent Microbiologists, skilled in all fields of microbiology, and prominently recognized within the food and pharmaceutical industry, clinical diagnostic laboratories, and research fields.


To transform students into devoted, gallant and value added citizens with sound scientific knowledge, to make highly economic and eco-friendly environment.


The Mission of Department is to promote good quality education and inspiring training in different disciplines of Microbiology to provide a compelling and applicable Microbiology curriculum that will train students at a high standard of scientific literacy and impart appropriate skill sets.


To inculcate in post graduates the spirit of professionalism enhance opportunities for research for students preserve, add to, evaluate, and transmit knowledge in the field of Microbiology; and serve society by promoting science.


To produce graduates with a cutting-edge knowledge, laboratory practice and professional healthcare skills that will be able to work professionally in the clinical laboratory

Eligibility for Admission(M.Sc. Applied Microbiology): The candidate shall be admitted to the course provided he/she has passed the bachelors degree in Science, in Microbiology, Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Biology, Life science, Animal science, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Home science, Nutrition and Dietetics, Biomedical science, Medical laboratory technology, B.S.M.S (or) B.A.M.S (or) B.U.M.S and Paramedical sciences of this University or other University recognized by the UGC as equivalent thereto.
Candidate shall be admitted to the examination only if he/she has taken the qualified degree in science/medical subjects as mentioned after having completed the prescribed courses consisting of 12 years of study and has passed the qualifying examination.

Eligibility for Admission(M.Phil. Microbiology): Candidates who have qualified the post graduate degree in Microbiology or other interdisciplinary subject (Botany, Zoology, Plant Science, Animal Sciences, Bio Chemistry, Biotechnology and M.Sc., Life Sciences) of this University or any other University recognized by the syndicate as equivalent thereto shall be eligible to register for the Degree of Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.).
A candidate who has qualified the Master’s Degree prior to 19.09.1991, with not less than 50% of marks, is eligible to register for M.Phil. Programme in this College. The SC/ST candidates are given 5% relaxation from the prescribed minimum marks

The department every year conducts academic and cultural fest “MICROMATSURI”.  Near to 500 students from various arts and science colleges in and around the Chennai participate in this fest of science. The event is a platform for students from various departments to unveil their talents in both co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

International Conference on Food Microbiology and Food Safety - Upcoming Changes, Technologies & Emerging Risks

The department organised an International Conference -“Food Microbiology and Food Safety– Upcoming Changes, Technologies & Emerging Risks” on 11 October 2017. The aim of this conference is to draw the attention of all participants towards sustainability and food security ensuring safe food from production to consumption. The conference had participants from various Arts and Science colleges. The level of participants included faculty, research scholars and students of both under graduation and post graduation. The proceedings of the Conference containing the abstracts and shortlisted papers were released.

Workshop on Microscopy and photomicrography

The department organised a one day Workshop on Microscopy and Photomicrography on 22 September 2017. The aim of this workshop is to impart a wide knowledge about different kinds of microscope, handling of microscope and photography of microscopic images. Nearly 183 students from 17 Colleges were benefited by this work shop.

Certification program on Implementation on HACCP Level 3 - In house training

G. and Research Department of Microbiology organized a training/certification program on “Food safety and its implementation on HACCP Level 3” for 2 days on 28th Feb & 1st March for students by SGS Academy (World’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company) in the department of Microbiology. Lead Auditors and Trained Professionals in Food Safety Management Systems from SGS Academy trained the students and issued certificates after evaluation.


The department also offers certificate courses in various fields like Food Technology, Brewing Technology, Bioenergy and Biomedical, Industrial and Solid Waste Management along with the curriculum. On request HACCP, ISO certification courses and examinations are arranged during the study period.


As part of the Curriculum, Industrial visit was arranged for II year students. They visited the “Scientific food testing Services pvt Ltd Thangam Colony, Anna Nagar, Chennai – 600040” on 10th and 11th October to learn about the Advance Instrumentation for Research in Life sciences.
